Second radiator?

Hi guys,

Though I have posted some threads in the Dutch language (translated by my girlfriend) I rather go back to my trusted English as she is not around for another week...lol :)
Hope you dont mind...

So here is my question (actually 2 questions):

First the specs, I have an i7 920 @ 3.9. Idle temp is 30-26-34-26, load is in the high 60's. Liquid cooling exist out of a Swiftech GTZ block, 240 Stealth rad, Laing MCP 355 and 1/2 tubes. All of this safely put into my Cosmos S.

Now I got a "tegoedbon" from RMA (defect Laing pump) and I was wondering how to effectively spend this :)

And I came up with the idea to put another rad in my system. It will be for just my core i7, so dont know if its overkill :) But the thing is when its at full load and I put my hand on top of the Stealth rad I feel hot (actually its more like warm, not that hot) air blowing from it. And thats why I have 2 questions:

1) Will a second radiator (preferably the Xchanger 240) help?
I was hoping to get a temp dropdown of like 3 to 5 degrees. Do you guys reckon that that is possible with 2 rads?
2) And if so will my pump be able to handle this (with two rads and such)?

As Im a 3D artist (Sofimage and 3ds Max user) I do not need to liquid cool my GFX card. I sometimes render for like 20 hours straight so I prefer to cooldown my proc as good as possible (@ a speed of 3.9 - 4 GHZ).

Thats it for now.

Cheers,

Corrica.

Thanks guys for your quick reply. However, what about my first question :)

Im still wondering if this is going to be overkill or not? Will my temps drop with 3-5 degrees (as Im hoping) if I put in the Xchanger?

Cheers,

Corrica

no. it won't be overkill.
it will not be near ambient so most definitely not.

you could also lap your cpu for a bigger drop
but yeah with a 2nd rad it will drop probably more dan 5 degrees celcius

do you not have room for a triple rad?

An i7 920 with an overclock to 4ghz and a TDP of 90-100% (load) is about 260 watt.
Another rad will defiantly drop your temps by a few, don't expect miracles though most you'll notice a drop in your load temps as it won't reach an equilibrium as fast as on a single rad.

Pump should easily handle this aswell.
I'd replace the stealth with a "real" radiator preferably a 320 TC/TFC/XSPC RX.
So you dont need to modify alot to the case.
If you don't care about making modifications add as much rad as you can. :icon_mrgreen:

I was bored, but this is to give you an indication of what to expect.

Medium fans on low speed (the stealth nor the the xspc are good for low speed) will yield you these rough results.
To get equal delta T results Stealth vs PA120.3 you need fans at 1800rpm vs 800rpm on the Thermochill.

The RS used in this example has at least the same thermoelectric dissipation to a stealth of the same size.
A delta of <10 is pretty much the standard but not necessary, stuff doesn't blow up if you don't.

Now you figure it out, good luck. :icon_wink:

Wow! Thanks for your answer!

Oki, now im considering to get a 360, which I will put in the upper section of the Cosmos.
However, if I take a 360 I rather go with a 360 + 240 (the one I have) setup. But then the main question will be (again...sorry): will my pump be able to handle this?

Cheers,

Corrica

Yes, with just a CPU you should get atleast 1.4GPM or more depending on the block.
>0.9 = win.

edit: If you are going for 2 radiators, get the MCR320.
It's in stock (I think) and it's more then decent for it's price.

your pump will have no problem with it. i'm doing this setup :

TFC 480+ TFC 360 + GTZ + MCP355+

Thanks mate! And you have the same MCP 355 pump? Damn, then this little boy is truly a...how you guys call it...."werkpaard" :)

@Spanky: I have a Swiftech GTZ block.

On topic: I have ordered an extra 360 rad, Swiftech MCR320 360MM Radiator.

So my plan is to combine it with the 240 Stealth and hoping on a temp dropdown of 5 degrees.

We will see :)

I'll let you know once its up and running.

Cheers guys.

Corrica.

i have a MCP655 and MCP355+ running right now in the same setup. And i can't find any differense , the only problem i have with the 655 is the level the pump can bring the water.. like oli4v said.

Ello guys,

So I got the pump and the radiator (thx Highflow!). So after few hours of rearranging my Cosmos, I turned the little boy on and the result are (yay!) good!!

So for anyone who is wondering for a future reference, the Core i7 got a dropdown of exactly 6 degrees (64C now vs 70C on Stealth 240 only) on load with the Stealth 240 and Swiftech 360 radiators in the same loop. Of course it depends on many other factors, but you can easily say that the Laing 355 can handle two rads on a Core i7 and have a significant temp drop.

Now of course it will be interesting to replace the Stealth 240, but thats something for the next time :)

Cheers guys for the advise!

Corrica.
