Sony’s Next Generation Portable is perfect for Massive Multiplayer Online-games (MMO)! so says John Smedley, head of MMO-Studio Sony Online Entertainment, in an interview.
Smedley once got asked if the free-to-play MMO’s could ever work on a console. He sees the NGP, just like the PlayStation 3, perfectly suitable for these free-to-play games.
John Smedley proposed in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz that “There are a lot of free-to-play games that are great, and I think that’s going to come over to console just as well.”
With games like SOE’s Free Realms, John Smedley also believes that “[Sony is] selling to an audience that already has the PS3 obviously – and by the way not the just the PS3, but in the future I can see other devices. Sony’s announced the NGP, and if that isn’t a perfect machine for doing MMOs on, then I don’t know what is.” He went on to mention that it’s only a matter of time until more and more developers attempt to enter the free to play scene with the success of other free-to-play titles in mind.
I don’t disagree with the notion that free-to-play games are generally increasing in quality as the market for them increases, and free to play games can work in a console setting if certain specifications are met.
I feel as though controls are the largest issue when it comes to trying to make an MMO on the console. Given the current standard of having many abilities as well as keys that may or may not need to be pressed, it’s a little iffy as to whether or not any of this can work, but with DC Universe Online on the PS3 I feel as though things may be looking up.
So, in short, I can’t disagree, Smedley, but I still don’t believe you about the NGP. Moving onto a handheld will only exaggerate the control issue, even if you take into account the system’s dual touchscreens. Even more so, MMOs are a genre for people who are able to dedicate large blocks of time to a single gaming session, while handhelds have always been a system for people in transit or on the crapper – that is to say not fully vested in the prospect of a long gaming session.
